A recently released IMS Research report, “The World Market for Semiconductors in Merchant Power Supplies”, predicts increasing growth for power supplies with digital control and management components, which in turn will lead to an increased demand for Silicon Carbide diodes, Digital Signal Processors and Microprocessors. A phasing out is predicted for of the older controlling components such as PFC controller ICs, analog controllers and regulators is also predicted.

Senior Market Analyst at IMS Research’s Power and Energy group, Ryan Sanderson, commented, “The impact on some analog component markets is somewhat offset by growth in the markets for components which have previously not been used in power supplies. The market for MPUs and DSPs in merchant power supplies is forecast to increase four-fold from 2010 to 2015, and the use of SiC diodes is increasing rapidly, particularly in the PFC stage.”

Roberts Warr as the UK distributor for Hitron power supplies will be in a good position to satisfy customer demand for this new technology as Hitron are in the final stages of developing a new range of power supplies which will use digital controls.

The report predicts that the total market for semiconductors and components in merchant power supplies withll be at $7 billion by 2015. AC-DC power supplies will account for just over 90% of this, with DC-DC power supplies accounting for less than 10%.

Linear Technology has introduced the LTC3860, a dual output synchronous step-down DC/DC controller for applications in high-current power distribution and industrial systems, DSP and ASIC supplies.

The DC/DC controller has multiphase operation, differential output voltage sensing and high-frequency operation.

The controller works in conjunction with external power train devices such as Power Blocks and DrMos, as well as discrete N-channel Mosfets and associated gate drivers, enabling flexible design configurations.

Up to 12 phases can be paralleled and clocked out-of-phase to minimise input and output filtering for very high current requirements (up to 300A).

The differential amplifier provides true remote output voltage sensing of both Vout and ground terminals, enabling high-accuracy regulation where IR losses occur through vias, trace runs and interconnects.

The LTC3860 operates with a VCC voltage ranging from 3V to 5.5V, a VIN voltage (drain voltage for the high-side Mosfet) from 3V to 24V and produces output voltages from 0.6V to 5V.

The device’s voltage mode control architecture allows for a selectable fixed operating frequency from 250kHz to 1.25MHz or it can be synchronised over the same range with its phased-lock loop (PLL).

The output current is sensed by monitoring the voltage drop across the output inductor (DCR) for maximum efficiency or using a sense resistor.

Its adjustable current limit can be configured for very low sense voltages (0mV to 50mV) to minimise power loss.

The LTC3860’s current sharing loop enables accurate current sharing between phases across multiple ICs both DC and during a load transient.

Additional features include adjustable soft start or tracking, output over-voltage protection and two power-good output signals.

Furthermore, it maintains +/- 1 per cent reference voltage accuracy over an operating temperature range of -40C to 125C.

The LTC3860 is housed in a 32-lead 5 x 5mm QFN package and is available from stock.

The LTC3109 is a step-up DC/DC converter and power-management IC that is designed to start up and run from millivolt input voltage sources such as thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and thermopiles.

The device’s proprietary auto-polarity topology allows it to generate usable power from input voltages as low as +/-30mV, enabling temperature differences as low as +/-1C to be harvested in lieu of traditional battery power.

This makes it ideal for energy-harvesting applications in which the input voltage polarity is unknown or is subject to reversal.

The LTC3109 uses two standard compact step-up transformers to provide a complete power-management solution.

Its 2.2V LDO can power an external microcontroler and its main output is pin selectable to one of four (2.35, 3.3, 4.1 or 5V) fixed voltages to power a sensor, data-acquisition circuits and/or a wireless transmitter.

A second switched output can be enabled by the host in order to power devices that do not have a micropower shutdown capability.

A storage capacitor provides continuous power, even when the input energy source is unavailable or intermittent.

The LTC3109’s low quiescent current of less than 7uA and high-efficiency design ensure the fastest possible charge times for the output reservoir capacitor.

The combination of the LTC3109’s leadless 4 x 4mm QFN-20 package (or leaded SSOP-20) and very small external components ensure a highly compact solution for energy-harvesting applications.

The LTC3109EUF is available in a 20-lead 4 x 4mm QFN package and the LTC3109EGN is available in a SSOP-20 package.

Industrial temperature grade versions, the LTC3109IUF and LTC3109IGN, are also available.

TDK-Lambda’s ZWS-BAF series of PCB-type AC/DC power supplies is designed to meet the demands of a range of applications, including factory automation, test and measurement, and LED signage.

The devices combine high efficiency – even at low-load conditions – with a wide operating temperature range, small size and 10-year electrolytic capacitor life.

Offering features such as active power factor correction and high-input transient protection, the ZWS100BAF and ZWS150BAF series operate from a universal input of 85 to 265V AC or 120-370V DC.

Offered with a choice of output voltages from 3.3 to 48V, each model in the ZWS-BAF series can be adjusted by up to +/-10 per cent of its nominal voltage to accommodate non-standard system voltages.

In comparison with its first-generation ZWS-AF series, TDK-Lambda’s design of the ZWS-BAF PCB layout has minimised internal heat losses, resulting in smaller size.

The improved heat dissipation provides a wider operating temperature range of -10 to 70C, allowing 100-per-cent load operation in a 50C environment – efficiency of the ZWS150BAF-24 model reaches up to 90 per cent.

Over-current and over-voltage protection circuitry are standard features and an optional remote on/off is available.

With active power factor correction (PFC) that meets EN61000-3-2, the ZWS-BAF models have a 3kV AC input to output isolation and meet conducted and radiated EMC conforming to EN55011/EN55022-B, FCC-B, VCCI-B.

They are delivered with TDK-Lambda’s five-year warranty, are safety-approved to UL/CSA/EN60950-1 and EN50178 and carry the CE mark, according to the LV Directive.
